Campaign against domestic violence. Poltava

The initiative "Do not be silent! #StopViolence" was implemented by the Light of Hope non-profit organization together with the Patrol Police of the city of Poltava with the support of the Community Policing Innovation Fund (CPIF) of the Police Training Assistance Project (PTAP), implemented in Ukraine by Agriteam Canada Consulting Ltd with the financial support of the Government of Canada.

The true stories of those who survived domestic violence featured in the awareness-raising campaign under "Do not be silent! Stop violence" project, which was implemented by placing outdoor advertising, promotion in social media and at the several offline events. The campaign lasted six months.

The main objective of this project is to develop cooperation between police and community to solve common problems and to strengthen mutual trust in issues of domestic violence.

Goals of the Project:

  1. Implementation of the law on violence prevention.
  2. Training of patrol police officers and district police officers in Poltava in terms of topics “Concept and Types of Domestic Violence”, “Regulatory and Legal Framework for the Prevention of Violence in the Family”, “The Algorithm of Actions of the Bodies of Internal Affairs in the Prevention of Domestic Violence”.
  3. Training of 40 school psychologists in terms of topics “Support and Assistance Provided to Children in Families Where Violence is Committed”, “Detection of Violence Against the Child. Symptoms of Child Abuse”.
  4. Signing of Memorandum of cooperation between Office of Education and Patrol Police, District Patrol Police and Preventive service and non-governmental organizations who are dealing with domestic violence.

Outcomes: 

  • 4 training lessons “Effective prevention and response to cases of domestic violence in the activities of patrol police officers” for 4 company commands of patrol police are conducted.
  • At least 180 patrol police officers and 30 district police officers will receive theoretical knowledge and practical skills regarding the peculiarities of work in reaction to cases of domestic violence, algorithm of actions by bodies of internal affairs when detecting violent facts and the mechanism of redirecting victims to non-governmental organizations to help.
  • Two one-day trainings for 40 school psychologists from city (with cooperation with patrol police) are conducted. School psychologists got the necessary knowledge and skills to identify and assist children in families whose violence is committed.
  • Number of citizens who received relevant information from media about domestic violence and the possibility of receiving assistance for the victims is at least 80,000 people.
  • Every patrol police officer and district police officer are provided with printed materials with a roadmap of "Areas of Assistance and Services for Persons Afflicted by Violence in the Family" in the amount of 2000 pcs.
  • Patrol police officers got 200 soft toys for children who are at the place of parental quarrel.
