UPI – Juvenile Prevention Inspector. A police officer as part of the educational process

The "UPI – Juvenile Prevention Inspector" initiative was implemented by the "Gender Streem" non-profit organization together with the National Police in the city of Dnipro and the Juvenile Prevention Department in the Dnipropetrovsk region as part of Canada-Ukraine Police Development Project (CUPDP) with the financial support of the Government of Canada.

The purpose of the initiative was to create a safe and child-centered environment in the major educational institutions in Dnipropetrovsk region through the cooperation of educational institutions and the police.

Objectives:

  • Train 13 juvenile prevention officers on reducing the level of crime and bullying among schoolchildren, promoting among them law-abiding and legally-aware attitudes.
  • Break stigma regarding the open dialogue of students and police officers to promote discussion of legal issues and shape their legal awareness, both when at and out of school.
  • Focus on preventing the crime, instead of responding to it.
  • Create an effective model for upscaling the work of police officers with children to prevent crimes.
  • Develop 9 lessons for students of grades 1-11 on 4 topics, taking into account age differences.
  • Establish cooperation between the extra-curriculum activities specialists in schools and juvenile police officers to coordinate their activities and promote synergy.
