Cooperation between the government institutions and non-profits to combat domestic violence. Zhytomyr

The initiative "Introduction of a Protocol for Interagency Cooperation between Government, Not-for-Profit Organizations, and the Police in the Prevention of Domestic Violence Activities" was implemented by the charitable foundation "Let Your Heart Beat" together with the Patrol Police of the city of Zhytomyr with the support of the Community Policing Innovation Fund (CPIF) under the Police Training Assistance Project (PTAP), implemented in Ukraine by Agriteam Canada Consulting Ltd with the financial support of the Government of Canada.

The purpose of the initiative was to introduce a protocol of cooperation between government and non-government organizations and police departments to effectively prevent domestic violence and protect children who witnessed violence in the city of Zhytomyr, taking into account the latest amendments to the legislation.

Objectives:

  • Promote community policing principles in the city of Zhytomyr;
  • Establish a clear protocol of cooperation between different agencies and organizations, including Patrol and District Police, working on prevention of domestic violence, taking into account the latest amendments to the legislation;
  • Ensure regular training for police officers by advocating for the inclusion of Patrol and District Police Offices in the city program "Ensuring Equal Rights and Opportunities for Women and Men".

Outcomes:

Community policing principles were promoted between the police and the community representatives in the city of Zhytomyr, namely:

  1. The interagency forum brough together 50 Patrol and District Police officers, local government officials, and representatives of various organizations involved in the issues related to violence.
  2. Some 4,000 residents were covered by the information messaging through local TV and radio.
  3. 1,200 people were reached by the Facebook page of the charitable foundation "Let Your Heart Beat".
  4. Close to 4,000 local residents were the readership of the posts appeared in the local newspapers and on web portals.
  5. Established clear protocol of cooperation between different agencies and organizations, including Patrol and District Police, working on prevention of domestic violence, taking into account the latest amendments to the legislation.
