Safety in communities. Kyiv region

The "Police in the Community Means Safety" initiative is a joint project of the "Nadiya" (Hope) not-for-profit organization and the Dyvychkivska district community. The project is implemented with the support of the Community Policing Innovation Fund (CPIF) of the Police Training Assistance Project (PTAP), implemented in Ukraine by Agriteam Canada Consulting Ltd with the financial support of Government of Canada.

The goals of the initiative were (i) to create a safe environment for local residents; (ii) together with the civil society in Divychkivska community and local authorities, restore trust in the district police and create an effective, functional action group for rapid response to safety issues and crimes in the community.

Objectives:
Create the "Safety Services" action group in the Divychkivska community. Together with not-for-profit organizations, local government, council members and local residents, develop the framework and action plan to create a safe environment for community residents.

Outcomes:

  • Every resident of the community had the opportunity to meet and talk to their district police officer, local government official, council member, or a local activist at a general meeting.
  • Every house and building in the community was provided with contacts and a photo of their district police officer for reaching out to them in case of safety concerns or other issues.
  • As a result of the survey, the terms of references were developed to create the Safety Services task force in the community, based on, whenever possible, the experience of the Canadian Safety Services working in communities and cities municipalities.
  • A Safe Community Development Plan has been created with active participation of the public and providing them information.
