Road safety playground for children. Vinnytsia

The Kids Police city initiative was implemented by the Vinnytsia centralized library system, representatives of the police and the Cultural Universe non-governmental organization with the support of the Community Policing Innovation Fund (CPIF) of the Police Training Assistance Project (PTAP), implemented in Ukraine by Agriteam Canada Consulting Ltd with the financial support of the Government of Canada.

The purpose of the initiative was to increase the level of public trust in law enforcement agencies and to build a partnership between the police and the community by establishing a children's police campus Library No.14.

Objectives:

  • Create a socio-cultural career guidance for children space one of a kind in Ukraine.
  • Instill in the younger generation confidence in the Patrol Police and understanding of the importance of cooperation between the police and the community in order to change lives of young people for the better.
  • Educate and consolidate children's knowledge regarding safe behavior on the road during extracurricular activities.
  • Instill in children respect to the profession of a police officer through role-playing games.

Results:

  • Conducted 6 events held jointly with the police officers. Young dwellers of the neighbourhood were actively involved in the activities offered by the game campus, i.e. autodrome. They learned the occupation of a police officer and read dedicated references. Cooperation between the library and the police covered families with children who can learn interesting aspects of the patrol police activities, as well as road traffic regulations and behaviour in the society. Such activities should improve trust in the police and promote efficiency of their work.
  • 2,500 people – this is the population of the neighbourhood, where the project is to be implemented. 1,000 children became active participants of the project. Besides, the Kids Police City project is a long-term project. This is because dwellers of the neighbourhood, i.e. parents with their children, will further continue to use the children’s autodrome, read dedicated references in the library, play story and role games in the playground. This project improved legal awareness among young people; it will teach them to respect and trust the police officers, as well as fundamental rules of behaviour and responding to emergencies.
