Road safety playground for children. Donetsk region

The Community Communication Platform with the Police at the Child Safety on the Road playground initiative was implemented by the Donbas Center for Civic Initiatives and the Sloviansk City Police with the support of the Community Policing Innovation Fund (CPIF) of the Police Training Assistance Project (PTAP), implemented in Ukraine by Agriteam Canada Consulting LTD with the financial support of the Government of Canada.  

The purpose of the initiative was to build partnerships between the police and local population to jointly address the problem of traffic safety, in particular the safety of children on the roads by creating a platform for informal communication and joint work of the Patrol Police with various community representatives on Child Safety on the Road playground created in the city of Sloviansk.

Outcomes:

A permanent platform has been established for regular informal communication between citizens and the Patrol Police, which contributed to increased trust, interaction, and mutual respect between the police and local citizens.

1. The playground was successfully built with pavement markings, according to traffic requirements, a fence, 4 traffic lights, and 35 road signs.
2. 184 children from various schools of the city gained skills in traffic rules with 37 adult community members taking part in activities on the site.
3. Not only did 30 police officers teach children traffic rules, but they also engaged with parents, teachers and the community.
4. Thousands of citizens learned about the project through publications in 4 local media: a website, radio station, newspaper, and a local TV channel.
