Boryspil is a safe city

The Safe City – Everybody’s Business initiative was implemented by the Safety Sector non-profit organization together with the Patrol Police of the city of Boryspil with the support of the Community Policing Innovation Fund (CPIF) of the Police Training Assistance Project (PTAP), implemented in Ukraine by Agriteam Canada Consulting Ltd with the financial support of the Government of Canada.

The purpose of the initiative was to engage local population in activities combatting the use of alcohol and tobacco in public places and provide information about the impact caused by these negative practices on public order. Also, the purpose of the project was to establish cooperation with the local population, raise awareness, as well as increase their accountability to the environment, which means the creation of an active community.

Objectives of the initiative were to eliminate the impact of the use of alcohol and tobacco in public places.

Outcomes:

  1. As a result of the project, effective communication channels have been established with local citizens by creating chat groups in messengers, which amounted to more than three hundred active chat members. Following the successful outcomes of the Project, local activists, together with the police, founded an Association of Motorists "Boryspil Autohelp", which promoted compliance with traffic rules and provided tech support to motorists.
  2. The number of cases of alcohol and tobacco use was significantly decreased in the participating communities. This was primarily achieved by sharing information on the ability of citizens to independently participate in the protection of public order — by joining existing non-profit organizations and associations in the city of Boryspil or joining the partnerships built as part of the Neighborhood Watch.
  3. Noteworthy is that the accomplished work has increased trust of citizens in law enforcement agencies. This was facilitated by sometimes small scale but joint activities — for example, the installation of information banners or the safety assessment model in a neighbourhood.
